Chris Hopkins conducting Orchestra of the City As a pianist, Chris has worked regularly with orchestras, chamber groups and renowned soloists. He has also worked extensively as an accompanist and répétiteur. Having completed Masters degrees with distinction at both the Royal Academy of Music (including a DipRAM) and the University of Bristol (in British Music), he was awarded a Leverhulme studentship and then a Junior Fellowship at the Royal Academy. Recently he has given performances around the world, throughout Europe and further afield in Japan and America, working in venues including the Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall. As répétiteur for Royal Academy Opera, he has worked with conductors including Sir Charles Mackerras, Trevor Pinnock, Jane Glover and Nicholas Kok in a wide range of repertoire. The last year has seen concerts with Song Circle at the Wigmore Hall and Chelsea and Oxford Lieder Festivals, with Charlie Siem and Daniel Hope in the Limelight series at the 100 Club, with the LCO in the Roundhouse, Camden, with Guy Johnston alongside the Orchestra of the City and many other projects. Chris has won a number of awards including the Brenda Webb Accompanist Prize, Cameron Carpenter, Leonard Hancock and the RAM’s Principal’s prize. More recently he took part in a profile of British composer Colin Matthews as part of BBC Radio 3's Proms season.

As a conductor Chris has worked with a wide range of ensembles and orchestras in venues across Europe, and in live performances on BBC radio. Currently Musical Director of the Orchestra of the City, Chris has also worked with the Blaze Ensemble, Corinthians Chamber Orchestra, European Medics Orchestra and others. He has worked as assistant to Sir Charles Mackerras, Jane Gover Dominic Wheeler and Trevor Pinnock. He recently finished a tour with the Welsh National Opera before working on The Most Incredible Thing, The Pet Shop Boys’ modern fairytale based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fable at Sadlers Wells, Covent Garden, and is currently working with the English National Opera. He is also an accomplished violinist and has played with the European Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Based in London he likes to devote as much time as possible to teaching both piano and violin.
